Lengard are highly commended for our green initiatives

As part of our 10  years relationship with the Hackney Learning Trust, we are carrying-out the extension to Southwold Primary School; a Victorian building in need of modernisation to current DfE standards.

Our site manager has helped the children understand how the project protects the environment by liaising with the school’s head-teacher, Gary Boyd, to provide information for teachers, pupils and parents. Our progress is tracked on the school’s website. Key achievements to date are:

    • Changing the design to source materials locally
    • Recycling materials to generate income for the school to purchase sports equipment
    • Re-using the site welfare cabins as a meeting room for the school’s cycle club, after the project is completed
    • Avoiding waste, by overlaying tarmac areas and renovating existing rainwater pipes

The awards were presented by the Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas at a ceremony attended by critically acclaimed children’s author Saci Lloyd (The Carbon Diaries), delivering a keynote speech in which she said:

“The future is directly affected by what we do today … You make me strong, and if you make me strong then you make others strong. This is a great movement we’re in. You are pioneers.”

    Note to editors:

The Green Heroes Awards recognise the achievements of pupils, parents and staff in making the schools in Hackney greener and more sustainable.
