Introduction

Lengard were appointed to undertake a complex and multi phased programme of alterations by Cambridge Education, a support services Company contracted by the London Borough of Islington to raise education standards.

Challenges

The challenges would be significant as Lengard implemented an eight point plan of refurbishment over 44 weeks while the school was fully operational through School term time. Top priority would be the safety, welfare and the security of the pupils and the school community as a whole. Works would include refurbishment & remodelling of all classrooms, ancillary areas, staff rooms and welfare facilities. The schools heating would be replaced and upgraded for greater energy efficiency. A new lift shaft would be constructed through all six levels of the School building facilitating disabled persons access. A contemporary landscaped soft play area was also constructed.

How Lengard overcame

Due to the scale of the phased programme, maximum liaison, discussion & co-operation with the School’s Head Teacher would be required to engage the School’s demanding curriculum including pupil’s SATS tests. Building materials and heavy plant were programmed to arrive before the start of the school day and after school had finished. Front elevation fabric repairs and the larger internal transitions were carried out during school holidays. Lengard’s Site Manager attended School assembly periodically to impress upon the Children the potential dangers of construction sites and to show the changing face of the school as key programme milestone were met. Upon completion the School benefited hugely from the new, modern, bright & energised and environment. The new multi sensory games area was extremely popular with the Children, especially the new football pitch.
