The newly refurbished Kingswood Early Years Centre is an integral part and the last addition to the widely acclaimed Gipsy Hill Federation of schools in Norwood, London SE19. The Kingswood Children’s Centre has been remodelled from what was previously a secondary school and now provides families with a range of services for children from pre birth to Key Stage 1, accommodating 250 children.
The Project Challenge:
Delivering this extensive fast track refurbishment in twenty six weeks would always prove challenging.
An external building fabric repair programme was required which included remedial works to the Victorian façade, complete replacement of the windows with high efficiency double glazed units and multi level landscaping on all four sides of the school building.
The school building was remodelled and repaired internally and now benefits from a new self contained commercial school kitchen, dining area, new infant and DDA toilets, a newly created crèche and nursery facility with remodelled classrooms to meet current space, light and acoustic standards for Key Stage 1 children.
Three individual multi sensory playgrounds were built around the school providing fantastic play time environments to the delight of the incoming children entering the nursery, reception class and class 1
Meeting the Challenge:
Lengard’s supply chain was encouraged to participate at the design stage to maximise practical and technical advice. The project was co-ordinated on site by two permanent managers who communicated real time programme amendments and updates to the client’s professional team, head teacher and contractors ensuring milestone were met.
Our management and coordination of trade and specialist contractors proved to be the key to success. Overcoming restricted access and key phasing requirements, the project team demanded a high collaborative effort from our partnered supply chain to deliver the project to achieve opening of the new school at the start of the academic year.
The demanding programme necessitated a seven day working week which was supported by the School and local residents, who our site manager kept informed by a combination of letter drops and open meetings, throughout the project’s duration.
