Description: Heritage Education Refurbishment of a Listed Building
The PLA Pavilion is a building of historic importance. Semi derelict and unsafe at the point of possession, the building was Grade II listed and previously owned by the Port of London Authority.
Following a joint funding initiative between English Heritage and the London Borough of Redbridge, Lengard was appointed to bring the Pavilion back to life and convert the building into administration and staff offices to become part of Cranbrook Primary School.
Undertaking a comprehensive demolition and strip out, overhauling the building and recreating the building’s original character proved challenging. The Pavilion had suffered long neglect and required structural strengthening alterations to accommodate the load a new roof would create.
The demolition and strip out were undertaken carefully and in close co-operation with the local conservation officer; all alterations and internal remodelling were carried out with Heritage approval. A new roof was constructed; joinery and finishes retained features of historical interest, including reinstatement of timber barrel-vaulted ceilings.
