Project Description

Introduction:

Lengard were contracted by The Mercers Company to overhaul No.6 Langley street, a 4 storey mid terraced commercial building which neighbours the famous Pineapple dance studios in Covent Garden, London. The building was soon to be the European head quarters of Sport Clothing Company Adidas.

The Challenge:

Access to the building was restricted; Langley Street which is extremely narrow with limited pedestrian pathways provides the only access to site. The task was to completely overhaul the building and make several large structural alterations & openings to  create and construct a new lightweight fifth floor

How Lengard Overcame:

We constructed a gantry with crane operation above the entrance helping to avoid blocking access through Langley street during construction. Significant structural works included the removal of the concrete roof, adaption of existing steel frame to accept the designed steel structure and new roof top extension, providing the 5th floor. The existing lift shaft was demolished and a new shaft constructed for a DDA compliant lift. Each floor was temporarily supported and cast back to be supported by the new block work shaft walls. Throughout the retained floors, structural strengthening was carried out to the floor joists.

Lengard also replaced all existing windows and created a new office entrance and reception area. Deliveries were controlled & timed to accommodate adjacent businesses. New toilet blocks were installed and the building now benefits from a full mechanical & electrical overhaul.
